China says a recent outbreak of avian flu in the northwestern
Xinjiang region is now under control. Official Chinese news agency Xinhua
reported Tuesday that there were no reported human cases. Xinhua said farmers
who were in contact with infected chickens were put under quarantine, but have
not shown symptoms of the disease.
Xinhua quoted officials saying that the warmer weather made
outbreaks in the area more likely because migratory birds are staying longer
than usual. Nearly five-thousand birds died in the outbreak in the city of
Turpan. Authorities killed a further 35-thousand birds to control its spread.
A government laboratory confirmed that the birds were infected by the
deadly H5N1 strain of the virus. The World Health Organization says the virus
has killed more than 200 people worldwide.
