(US Admiral Wants More Transparency from China's Military)

The head of U.S. forces in the Pacific says China needs to be more open about its military expansion, and he suggested the build-up was aimed at Taiwan.

Admiral Timothy Keating told a news conference in Beijing Tuesday that he is concerned about China's development of new hardware, including long-range cruise missiles and anti-satellite technology.

One of China's top generals has said the United States should not be concerned about increases in China's military spending, which went up to a reported 45 billion dollars last year. General Chen Bingde (chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army) met with Admiral Keating Monday and said China sees no need to compete militarily with the United States, and that its military development is for defensive
purposes.

Keating said today that the main theme of his visit is to build trust with his Chinese counterparts.

MySpace, the world's most popular social networking site, has agreed to set stricter guidelines in an effort to protect children from online predators.

MySpace, along with the attorneys-general of 49 U.S. states, announced (Monday) various new safety measures. Among them are a 24-hour police hotline, and improving response time to complaints of inappropriate content.

They also announced the creation of an online safety task force that will explore new technologies, including better ways to verify ages of MySpace users.

The Web site owned by NewsCorp will also create a database allowing parents to prevent their children from opening an account.

Texas is the only state that did not endorse the agreement.
