(Katrina causes damages in the southern U.S.)

Reports of widespread flooding and property damage are coming in from the southern United States as Hurricane Katrina pounds the region with high winds and torrential rain. The U.S. National Weather Service says Katrina has weakened to a category three hurricane but is still packing winds of 200 kilometers per hour. Flooding appears to be especially severe in low-lying New Orleans, where officials had warned Katrina would overwhelm the city's system of protective levees.

Winds from the storm have torn holes in the roof of New Orleans' Super dome, a football stadium where some 10-thousand people are waiting out the storm. Other cities where flooding is reported include Biloxi, Gulf port, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama.

(U.S. and Afghan forces kill a Taleban commander)

U.S. and Afghan forces have killed a suspected Taleban commander and three of his fighters in southern Afghanistan. A U.S. military spokesman says Payenda Mohammed, who was thought to have led about 150 rebels, was killed in a battle in Kandahar province Wednesday. He was believed responsible for numerous rocket attacks, ambushes and other guerrilla-style assaults.

At least three other militants were killed and 15 wounded as U.S. warplanes and helicopters rocketed caves along a ridge where they were hiding. Afghan and U.S. forces have stepped up attacks in recent months to flush out militants and boost security to prevent the Taleban from carrying out threats of subverting next month's parliamentary polls.
