(IAEA, El Baradei Win Nobel Peace Prize)

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the International Atomic Energy Agency and its director, Mohamed El Baradei.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo said the U.N. agency and Mr. El Baradei will share the award equally. It cited "their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure the safety of atomic energy when it is used for peaceful purposes."

Mr. El Baradei said the award sent a very strong message about the importance of his agency's role. He said it will strengthen his resolve and those of his colleagues to continue efforts to halt the spread of nuclear arms.

Mr. El Baradei has headed the IAEA since 1997. In recent years, he has sought to deal with such issues as nuclear programs in North Korea and Iran.

Millions of New Yorkers are heading to work under tightened security today (Friday), after city officials announced a threat of a terrorist attack on the subway system.

Reporters in New York say today's use of the city's extensive transit system appears consistent with normal weekday levels.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said late Thursday officials had never before had such a specific threat to the subway system.
