A top official in the Israeli government has suggested a deal in which Israel turns over control of some Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem to the Palestinians, in exchange for international recognition of Israel's annexation of Jewish neighborhoods.
Vice Prime Minister Haim Ramon made the comments in an interview on Israel Radio Monday. He did not give details of how Jerusalem would be divided, but did say it is premature to talk about giving up Israeli control over the Old City, which contains sites holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians.
The status of Jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is likely to be discussed at a U.S.-sponsored Mideast peace conference planned for next month.
