(Taiwan Showcases Military Prowess at National Day Parade, Blasts China)

Taiwan put its military prowess on display for the first time in more than a decade Wednesday in its annual National Day parade, as President Chen Shui-bian lashed out at the island's biggest neighbor and rival, China. In his address, Mr. Chen renewed his pledge to push for Taiwan's membership in the United Nations, and stressed the island's separate identity from China.

He also argued that Taiwan was not the source of tensions with China. He said the problem was Beijing's totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and dictatorship.

Taiwan paraded launchers for local and U.S.-supplied missiles at the celebration as F-16 fighter jets streaked across the sky.

Taiwan and China split during civil war in 1949 and Beijing claims the self-ruled island is part of its own territory.

(Tibetan Exiles Storm Chinese Embassy in India)

More than 20 Tibetan exiles have stormed the Chinese embassy in India Wednesday to protest Beijing's tightening restrictions on their homeland. The exiles pushed their way through the front gate of the embassy in New Delhi. Some chained themselves to the gate or embassy flag pole. Others wrote slogans such as "Free Tibet" in red paint across the main gate and embassy walls.

The demonstrators were later forcibly removed by Indian police. The group was protesting a recent Chinese order that the government must approve all reincarnations of Tibetan spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama.

The current Dalai Lama has been in exile since 1959, after a failed uprising against Chinese communist forces.
