(About 100 Dealths Every Day Due to Violence in Iraq)

United Nations humanitarian aid official Jan Egeland says the violence in Iraq is going unchecked, claiming about 100 lives per day. Jan Egeland says the victims include police recruits, judges and lawyers. He says women also have increasingly become the victims of so-called honor crimes. Egeland told reporters Wednesday in Geneva that 315-thousand people in Iraq have been displaced in the past eight months.

A study estimates that some 655-thousand Iraqis have died since the March 2003 invasion of their country.

The study, published in the British journal The Lancet, says about 600-thousand of those people died from violence, mostly gunfire. It says deaths from car bombings also have increased. Researchers also found a small increase in deaths from disease and other causes.

(Japan Bans All North Korean Ships, Imports)

Japanese officials have approved new economic sanctions against North Korea, banning all North Korean imports and ships and most North Korean nationals. Officials said Japan is imposing the sanctions because it is the country most threatened by North Korea's long-range missiles and nuclear weapons programs.

The South Korean defense minister said the military will likely "improve and enlarge" its forces to respond to a potential nuclear threat from North Korea.

North Korea said Monday it had conducted a nuclear weapons test. In response to U.N. Security Council deliberations about possible sanctions, Pyongyang said it considers continued pressure from the United States to be a declaration of war. The country's official news agency KCNA said Pyongyang will take "physical countermeasures" if Washington keeps pressing the government of Kim Jong Il over its nuclear program.
