The United Nations Security Council has issued its first statement on Burma, strongly deploring the recent military crackdown against pro-democracy protesters and calling for a release of all political prisoners.
All 15 Council members approved the statement Thursday with some compromises, after China and Russia successfully argued to soften the language.
A critic of the Burmese government and former Burmese ambassador to China said it was important that China and Russia approved the statement. They have vetoed action against Burma in the past.
The Chinese foreign ministry today (Friday) said the U.N. statement is designed to help Burma solve its own problems, through consultations between the government and the people.
Burma's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, welcomed the U.N. statement, but said it will take time to have an impact.
