中国批美允许前台湾总统来访 (China Criticizes US For Allowing Former Taiwan President To Visit)

中国外交部指责美国政府允许台湾前总统李登辉访问美国。中国官方的新闻社引述外交部发言人(孔泉)的话说，北京强烈反对李登辉此次访问，并且敦促华盛顿不要向台湾传递“错误信号”，让人以为美国支持台湾独立。

美国国务院说，李登辉先生是一个个人，国务院将李登辉的访问视为私人来访。这位台湾前总统自从2000年卸任以来，一直是支持台独的重要人物。1995年，李登辉访问母校康奈尔大学之后，中国做出反应，在台湾沿海试射导弹。华盛顿随后向台海地区派去两个航空母舰战斗群。

China's foreign ministry has criticized the U.S. government for allowing former Taiwan president Lee Teung-hui to tour the United States. China's official news agency quotes a foreign ministry spokesman (Kong Quan) as saying Beijing strongly opposes the visit, and urges Washington to not send "wrong signals" suggesting it supports Taiwan independence.

The U.S. State Department says Mr. Lee Teung-hui is a private individual and it views his visit in that regard. The former president has been a prominent support of Taiwan's independence movement since leaving office in 2000. In 1995, China responded to his visit to his alma mater Cornell University by test-firing missiles off the coast of Taiwan. Washington later sent two battle carrier groups to the region.

欧盟说在土耳其发现致命禽流感病毒 (EU Says Lethal Strain Of Bird Flu Found In Turkey)

欧盟委员会说，检验结果显示，在土耳其家禽身上发现的禽流感病毒是致命的H5N1病毒。这种病毒已经在亚洲造成几十人丧生。欧盟卫生专员马科斯.奇普里亚诺星期四说，化验显示，土耳其禽流感病毒跟在俄罗斯，蒙古和中国发现的病毒有直接联系。

欧盟委员会已经禁止从土耳其进口所有活禽和羽毛。在罗马尼亚多瑙河三角洲进行的化验查出一种禽流感后，欧盟星期四又对罗马尼亚采取了类似措施。

The European Commission says test results confirm that the bird flu virus found in Turkish poultry is the deadly H5N1 strain that has killed dozens of people in Asia. E.U. Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said Thursday the Turkish test results indicate a direct relationship with viruses found in Russia, Mongolia and China.

The European Commission has imposed a ban on all imports of birds and feathers from Turkey. It took similar action Thursday against Romania, after tests detected a strain of bird flu in the Danube delta.
