(Japanese and Chinese Prime Ministers Agree to Boost Ties)

Leaders from Japan and China have agreed to put their troubled ties behind them and work to improve relations. Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao met Tuesday in Singapore on the sidelines of meetings for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and pledged to do more to work together.

During the meeting, Mr. Wen invited the Japanese prime minister to visit China at a convenient time. The two also agreed to step up efforts to resolve a thorny dispute over gas exploration rights in the East China Sea.

The meeting was a first for Mr. Fukuda, who stepped into office in September. His moves for closer ties are a sharp contrast to the administration of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
