American and Chinese officials say their countries need to
fight protectionism as they prepare for tough high-level negotiations this
week over trade, exchange rates and intellectual property.
In remarks to a seminar in Beijing Monday, U.S. Commerce
Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said America and China need to work together to
block protectionist sentiment. Gutierrez said the only things that really
help protect markets are innovation, engagement and competition.
In an interview published in the official China Daily
newspaper today, Vice Commerce Minister Chen Deming said that both sides
should avoid unreasonably and unilaterally blaming the other side.
Protectionism is expected to be given prominent attention this week
when U.S. and Chinese officials begin Cabinet-level talks in Beijing on
Wednesday.
