| Journalists at a popular
Beijing newspaper have walked out to protest the dismissal of the newspaper's
top editor and two deputies. Accounts from China say at least 100 reporters
at The Beijing News stopped filing articles Thursday. The walkout comes
one day after the editor-in-chief, Yang Bin, was dismissed in a meeting
with the heads of the Guangming Daily, which partly owns the newspaper.
The reasons for the dismissals were not released, but Reporters Without
Borders, an international media freedom group says the move was part
of an attempt to tighten government control over the media. The Beijing
News is known for printing sensitive articles and editorials about the
government and social issues.
International media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders says
it is shocked and dismayed by the dismissals, and urged the reinstatement
of the three editors.
