(Reporters Protest Firing of Popular Newspaper Editor)

Journalists at a popular Beijing newspaper have walked out to protest the dismissal of the newspaper's top editor and two deputies. Accounts from China say at least 100 reporters at The Beijing News stopped filing articles Thursday. The walkout comes one day after the editor-in-chief, Yang Bin, was dismissed in a meeting with the heads of the Guangming Daily, which partly owns the newspaper.

The reasons for the dismissals were not released, but Reporters Without Borders, an international media freedom group says the move was part of an attempt to tighten government control over the media. The Beijing News is known for printing sensitive articles and editorials about the government and social issues.

International media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders says it is shocked and dismayed by the dismissals, and urged the reinstatement of the three editors.

(10 Dead As Egyptian Police Break Up Sudanese Refugee Protest)

Egyptian officials say at least 10 Sudanese migrants have been killed in clashes with police trying to end a 3-month-long Sudanese refugee protest. The violence erupted early Friday when riot police armed with sticks and water cannons stormed the small square in an affluent Cairo neighborhood. Witnesses say police beat the protesters as they loaded them onto buses and carried them away.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said migrant leaders resorted to violence despite government attempts to settle the problem peacefully. The ministry said a stampede by the protesters caused the 10 casualties. But reporters at the scene say they saw no stampede.

The Sudanese refugees were demanding that the U.N. Refugee Agency review cases of asylum-seekers whose applications the agency has rejected, and resume resettling refugees in third countries, mainly the United States, Canada and Australia. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says the agency is deeply shocked by the violence and loss of life.
